Ray of Frost 5e| D&D 5th Edition

Ray of frost 5e, according to the Dungeon and Dragon handbook, states that  ‘’A frigid beam of blue-white light streaks toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, it takes 1d8 cold damage, and its speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of your next turn.’’

The spell’s damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th Level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).’’ Check out the Half Plate 5e: The Half Plate Armor In D&D 5e

Overview

Ray of Frost is a Backup wizard skill that is unlocked at the second level. The ray fires a flat beam of cold that chills and damages a single enemy while draining Arcane Power continuously.

This ability is often compared to Disintegrate as both fire a straight beam of energy, but in operation they are very different. Both have a large resource drain when active, nonetheless Ray of Frost does not pierce, and that makes it much less harmful to multiple enemies.

However, It worthy to say that Ray of Frost does good damage to a single target, and the chilling effect slows down enemies, making it helpful to land further hits on an approaching opponent.

Background of the Ray of Frost

The skill-set of the spell is fun to use and very efficient and effective against a single targets, with strong damage and slowing down properties. However, the Arcane Power drain is very high, and thus the damage per second is much lower than a variety of other earlier game of wizard abilities.

Ray of Frost is a blast in an icy ray that makes a spell attack roll and then the ray deals cold damage equal to 1d4 + your spellcasting ability modifier.

The Skill Design of the Spell

Just like disintegration, this skill of the ray targets, but trades the piercing of that ability for a slowing cold effect. So many sorcerer players believe this is what makes Ray of Frost outstanding against single targets, but far less harmful overall, particularly against large groups of enemies.

Developmental stages of the Spell

It was in 2008 that the Ray of Frost was first used in Blisscon, though it only appeared in the game-play movie; the Wizard used it against the skeleton king’s pit. Then, later in 2009 BlizzCon made the ray available in its gaming demo, but sadly  it was too high to be attempted by the fans.

So by July 2011, the skill levels have been eliminated in the Press Case, allowing skills to be continuously unlocked from level 1 to level 30. As a result, all skill levels have been changed and Ray of Frost has become a level 21 skill.

The Critical Success

When the ray is successful, the target of the blast will receive double damage and as well takes a –10-foot status penalty to its Speeds for 1 round. However, on a complete success of the Ray of Frost blast, the target will automatically take normal damage.

Stacking the Speed Reduction from Ray of Frost

Many spellcasters often ask if they can stack the speed reduction from Ray of Frost.  So for instance I hit you with Ray of Frost, and on the same sport, my player friend also hit you with Ray of Frost immediately after I hit you.

So the question is if the above scenario occurs, your speed reduced by (10×2=)20 until the start of my next turn? The Answer to above illustration is NO, They would not stack

This is Combining Magical Effects

Normally, the results of the various spells are combined together as the durations of the spells overlap. However, different effects of the same spell are not combined. Instead, the most potent effect—such as the highest bonus—from these castings is applied while their durations overlap.

Here is a typical example of this, if two clerics cast a blessing on the same target, the character will only receive a spell advantage once; he or she will not be able to roll two bonus dice. Read also Finger of Death 5e| D&D 5th Edition

Even though the Ray of Frost’s damage would apply with each and every hit, so it’s inevitable that the reduction in the speed is an effect that would render the rule above rule powerless and thus prevent it from stacking with itself.

However, you do not need to panic, because would still stack with other speed reducers like Lance of Lethargy or even the Frost Lance.

The Frequent Use of Ray of Frost out of Combat

I noticed lately that so many sorcerer players want to use Ray of Frost for so many out of combat situations/scenarios. And whenever they wanted to use the frost to freeze a door to enforce it, and then freeze a boat to keep in one place on the water so that they can use it to seal a hole in the ground.

So many got would be fine with it at the early stage probably because they want to encourage more creativity, but  at a point they start thinking it might be too reliant on it. Now in your mind, you may probably be thinking If you’re even allowing correct use of the spell?

The ANSWER is

Freezing a door does not make it stronger, it makes it weaker. A frozen ship or boat floats just like a warm one, and unless it freezes all the body of water it’s in, it’s always going to move.

Explain that while you’ve allowed it before, you’ve made a mistake, and you’re not going to let the spell do things that you can’t do. Check out the D&D Map Maker: Best Fantasy Map Creator Online Free

Making the door weaker also has a big impact. While it works to make sense, I’d say that the spell’s impact is not strong enough to have an effect.

My View on Ray of Frost

Sometime last year I joined a game and it happens that the NPC I choose had previously joined the party. I get to know that the NPC used to be a farmer who carries a pitchfork and later becomes a strong powerful magic sorcerer

Though he never knew he was a magic sorcerer, and so he just had the belief that he is just a favored one and a lucky person to be victorious at all times, even in a severe bad situation as well good times. Nonetheless, he was a magic born sorcerer but the secret unfolds as time went on.

How I opted for the Ray of Frost or 5e Ray of Frost

Ray of Frost 5e

Because the NPC was a farm, so I made up my mind that his cantrips will be perfect for a farmer, just as the Mold Earth and the Mending.

Though in my mind, I wanted to go for a kind of combat spells, when I realized that the old pitchfork wasn’t going to be enough, then I opted for the Ray of Frost, Also check out the Burning hands 5e in Dungeon and Dragon Spells

Yes, I’m much aware that produce flame is much better and could be more meaningful, I know what you are thinking of me right now, but you guys just have to calm down, because I understand the game much better, and at least didn’t I didn’t go for the Booming Blade, so need crucifying me.

As time passes, I came to realize my passion for the side effect of the d&d 5e ray of frost spell as making the target a little slower. On many occasions, the ray of frost 5e   will be a total life server.

On a normal circumstance,10 feet may not be much, however, if you a person who has been backing up 30 feet and slowing your pursuer by 10 feet, it makes a huge difference.

Downsides of the Ray of Frost 5e Spell

Like every other spell, a ray of frost 5e or d&d ray of frost, there are some downsides and upsides, here we have discussed the major downside of the dnd 5e ray of frost. The two major downsides include. Check out the Pearl of Power 5e Warlock: Magic Item in Dungeons & Dragons

  •  Missing
  •  Cold damage

Missing

The first major downside of the ray of frost spell is ’Missing’ this particular downside is common with spells, and if you are a player or spell-caster you will agree with missing sucks like some kind of sting, it even sucks more missing with a weapon. I really could not figure out the reason behind that

Cold Damage

Another drawback of the dnd ray of frost spell is cold damage; this is the most resisted basic element of D&D 5e spells. And it will not all work out. You want to cool the Flame Skull down, for instance. Don’t. It’s not just a flaming thing, it’s undead as well, and it has cold resistance.

The upside of the Ray of Frost 5e Spell

The upside is the 60 feet range and it’s commonly despised by fire-based animals. But, mostly, it’s just cool to fire a ray of snow, literally. Also, check out the Kobold 5e: Kobold (Dungeons & Dragons)
